Himalayan Balsam Wales

Balsam Blog 4

We have successfully finished a second sweep of the upper section which took about the same time as the 1st sweep.

Areas were found that were too small to be spotted on the 1st sweep or had not started growing at all showing the importance of more than 1 sweep.

I am choosing this as 1 of my prime locations to photograph as it is geographically easily identifiable compared to under gorse sites.

We also managed a second sweep of the lower section to hit anything we had missed before it goes to seed. This was an intermediate sweep due to budget restraints and to give me some time away from the river without concern.

So we didnt strim everything on the lower section just the flowering and tall Balsam that we missed the 1st time around we were however pleasantly surprised of our success rate on sweep 1.

So to sum up. We have cleared the upper region of the Ystwyth ie. the section we have been working on for the last 2 years thoroughly twice and the new lower section thoroughly once and a second walk through to get what we missed.

After a few weeks break to allow new plants to grow again we hope to do a thorough sweep of the whole section once and a final sweep of the upper section after that.

Best wishes

Tom.
